PromptsTopics and competitors

Topics and competitors

Group prompts into topics and choose the competitors Opttab compares you with, and see how both shape your metrics.

Topics group your prompts by theme, such as "Pricing" or "Integrations". Competitors are the brands Opttab measures you against. Together they decide how your Dashboard is sliced and who you're ranked with.

How they affect your metrics

Topics

Create a topic

You can create a topic in three ways:

  • On the Prompts page, click Add topic in the topics rail, enter a Topic name, and save.
  • In the Add Prompt form, type a new name in Topic and choose Create.
  • In an import file, use a new name in the Topic column. The preview tells you how many new topics will be created.

A new topic starts with 0 prompts. It appears in the banner and table once a prompt is added to it.

Topic limits

The number of topics depends on your plan, and is counted across every workspace in your account — see Plans and billing.

How topics affect metrics

  • Topics don't change how a metric is calculated. They let you filter it.
  • Use the Topics chip on the Dashboard to see metrics for one topic.
  • Visibility by topic compares you with each competitor per topic and tags topics where a competitor is ahead with Needs work.
  • Prompt coverage is measured per topic on the Prompts page.

Competitors

Only Owners and Admins can add or remove competitors.

Where to manage competitors

Brand Hub is the main place to manage your competitors, with each brand's website and relation.

You can also add competitors from:

  • Dashboard › Leaderboard › Manage: opens Manage competitors. Enter a Brand name and Brand website, then click Add competitor.
  • Prompt details › Overview › Competition › Discovered: click Track as competitor.
  • Dashboard › Actions: rows that suggest reviewing a brand as a competitor open Manage competitors with the name filled in.

Changes apply from the next run

Adding or removing a competitor takes effect from the next run. Past answers are not re-scored:

  • A newly added competitor shows "—" (not measured) on earlier answers, not 0%.
  • A removed competitor stops being tracked, but answers already measured keep its history.

How competitors affect metrics

MetricEffect
Visibility (yours)No effect. It counts answers that mention you, out of all answers.
Share of VoiceDirect effect. Your share is out of you plus your tracked competitors, so adding a competitor usually lowers it.
Leaderboard and Brand Visibility TrendShow only you and tracked competitors.
Visibility by topicOne column per tracked competitor.
CitationsPages on a tracked competitor's website are labelled A tracked competitor.

Brands named in answers that you don't track are Discovered brands. They appear on the prompt detail page and in Dashboard Actions, but not in the Leaderboard or Share of Voice.

See Metrics explained for the formulas.
