MonitorMetrics explained

Metrics explained

The definition, formula and a worked example for every number Opttab shows on the Dashboard and Prompts pages.

This page is the reference for every metric Opttab reports. Other pages link here instead of repeating the definitions.

All metrics are built from AI answers: the text one AI engine returned for one prompt on one run. Change the period or filters and every metric is recalculated from the answers that match.

Key terms

TermWhat it means
Answer (or response)The text one AI engine returned for one prompt on one run. Each answer belongs to the local day it was collected, in your workspace time zone (UTC by default).
Eligible answersEvery finished answer that matches the selected period and filters.
MentionThe answer names your brand or a tracked competitor. Opttab records two things: whether the brand was mentioned in the answer (yes or no), and how many times it was named (the mention count).
CitationA web page or domain the answer links to or bases itself on.
OwnershipEvery citation is labelled Your domain, A tracked competitor or Third party.
Tracked rosterYour brand plus the competitors you track. Brands that AI answers name but you don't track are called Discovered brands and are kept separate.
Branded promptA prompt that names your brand or one of your products.

How answers turn into metrics

Visibility counts answers. Share of Voice counts mentions. Share of Citations counts citations. That is why the three numbers rarely match.

Visibility

What it meansHow often AI answers mention your brand.
FormulaAnswers that mention you ÷ all eligible answers × 100
ExampleYou track 10 prompts on 4 AI engines, so one daily run gives 40 answers. Your brand appears in 12 of them. Visibility = 12 ÷ 40 × 100 = 30%.
  • Every eligible answer counts in the total, including answers that mention no brand at all.
  • An answer that names you five times still counts once.
  • On the Dashboard, the Visibility Score donut splits every answer into four slices:
    • Mentioned: you were mentioned on an unbranded prompt.
    • Branded: you were mentioned on a branded prompt.
    • Competitor branded: a tracked competitor was mentioned and you were not.
    • No response: neither you nor a tracked competitor was mentioned.
  • The same formula is used per brand (Leaderboard, Brand Visibility Trend), per topic (Visibility by topic), per country (Visibility by Market) and per prompt.
Branded prompts usually mention you, so they lift Visibility. Check the Branded slice to see how much of your score comes from them.

Share of Voice

What it meansYour share of all brand mentions, compared with the competitors you track.
FormulaYour mention count ÷ (your mention count + every tracked competitor's mention count) × 100
ExampleAcross the period's answers, your brand is named 30 times, Competitor A 50 times and Competitor B 20 times. Share of Voice = 30 ÷ 100 × 100 = 30%.
  • This metric uses mention counts: an answer that names you three times adds three.
  • Only your tracked roster is compared. Discovered brands are not part of the total.
  • Adding or removing a competitor changes the total, so it can move your Share of Voice even if your own mentions stay the same.

Share of Citations

What it meansHow often the sources AI answers rely on are pages on your own website.
FormulaCitations to your domain ÷ all citations × 100
ExampleThe period's answers cite 80 sources in total. 8 of them are pages on your site. Share of Citations = 8 ÷ 80 × 100 = 10%.
  • Your website and any extra domains listed in Brand Hub under Other domains count as your domain.

Sentiment

What it meansHow positively AI answers talk about your brand.
FormulaPositive ÷ (positive + neutral + negative) × 100
ExampleOpttab classifies 40 opinions about your brand: 20 positive, 15 neutral, 5 negative. Sentiment = 20 ÷ 40 × 100 = 50%.
  • Sentiment is analysed after the answers are collected, so it can stay empty for a while after other metrics fill in.
  • A blank sentiment means "not analysed yet", not "neutral".

Mentions

What it meansHow often a brand is named in AI answers.
Two ways to countMentioned (yes or no per answer) feeds Visibility. Mention count (every time the name appears) feeds Share of Voice.
ExampleOne answer names your brand three times. It counts as 1 answer that mentions you, and 3 mentions.

Citations

What it meansThe pages and domains AI answers link to or base themselves on.
OwnershipYour domain, A tracked competitor or Third party.
UsageOn prompt tables, Usage is the number of distinct answers that cited the source.
ExampleA review site cited by 6 different answers shows Usage 6, owner Third party.

Responses

What it meansThe number of AI answers collected. Each prompt produces one answer per AI engine per run.
FormulaPrompts × AI engines × runs
Example10 prompts on 4 engines, run daily for 7 days: 10 × 4 × 7 = 280 responses.

How many engines and runs you get depends on your plan. See Plans and billing.

Prompt coverage

What it meansHow many of the prompts defined for your workspace Opttab actually tracks.
FormulaTracked prompts ÷ (tracked prompts + prompts not tracked yet) × 100
ExampleA topic has 8 tracked prompts and 2 suggested prompts you haven't added yet. Coverage = 8 ÷ 10 × 100 = 80%, with 2 gaps.
  • "Not tracked yet" prompts are suggestions or generated prompts saved to your discovery pool but not scheduled. Each one is a gap.
  • The Dashboard Prompt Coverage tile shows this for the whole workspace.
  • On the Prompts page, Avg. Coverage is the average of each topic's coverage, over topics that have prompts.
  • Coverage is about which prompts you track. It does not measure whether you were mentioned.

Change pills and the previous period

What it meansHow a metric moved compared with the period just before.
ComparisonThe selected period against the period of the same length directly before it.
ExampleWith Last 7 days selected, Visibility for the last 7 days is compared with the 7 days before that. 30% now against 25% before shows a rise.
  • When the earlier period had no data, there is no pill. Opttab doesn't show a made-up "+100%".
  • On the Dashboard, a change is drawn only when the value moved by at least 1 percentage point.

Periods

Every metric uses the period picker: Today, Last 7 days (default), Last 30 days, Last 3 months, Last 6 months, Last 12 months or Custom range.

  • Each period ends on the current local day in your workspace time zone.
  • Today covers only the current day, so it can look sparse.
  • A custom range covers 1 to 365 days and must fall inside the last 365 days.
