Workspaces are the core organizing unit in Opttab. Instead of managing one long list of open tabs across every project you’re working on, you segment them into named collections that you can open, close, and restore as a single unit. This keeps your browser focused and your context switching intentional.

What is a workspace?

A workspace is a named collection of tabs tied to a specific project, topic, or context — for example, “Q3 Marketing Campaign” or “Backend API Work”. Only one workspace is active at a time, so switching between them gives you a clean slate without permanently losing the tabs from the previous one. All workspace data is saved automatically, so you never need to manually export or bookmark before closing.

Creating a workspace

1

Open the Opttab panel

Click the Opttab icon in your browser toolbar or press Ctrl+Shift+Space (Cmd+Shift+Space on macOS) to open the panel.
2

Click New Workspace

In the panel sidebar, click the + New Workspace button near the top of the workspace list.
3

Enter a name

Type a name for your workspace in the input field that appears.
4

Press Enter

Press Enter to confirm. The workspace is created and becomes active immediately.
5

Add tabs

Drag tabs from the panel into the new workspace, or click Add current tab to add the page you’re on right now.

Switching workspaces

To switch to a different workspace, click its name in the panel sidebar. You can also use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+W (Cmd+Shift+W on macOS) to cycle through your workspaces. When you open a workspace, Opttab gives you the option to suspend the previous one — suspending unloads those tabs from memory while keeping them saved, which can improve browser performance if you work with many open tabs.

Saving and restoring sessions

Opttab saves your workspace state automatically as you work. If your browser crashes, you close the window unexpectedly, or your computer restarts, your tabs are not lost. To restore a session, reopen your browser, click the Opttab icon, and click the workspace name in the panel. Opttab reopens all the tabs exactly as they were.

Sharing a workspace

To share a workspace with a teammate, right-click the workspace name in the sidebar and select Share. You can export it as a shareable link or download it as a JSON file. Your teammate can import the JSON into their own Opttab installation by going to the panel menu and selecting Import workspace, or they can open the shared link directly if they have Opttab installed.

Deleting a workspace

To delete a workspace, right-click its name in the panel sidebar and select Delete. A confirmation dialog appears before anything is removed. Once you confirm, all tabs in that workspace are closed and the saved session is removed.
Deleting a workspace permanently removes the saved session. If you want to keep a record of the tabs, export the workspace as a JSON file or a shareable link before deleting it.
Workspace sync is tied to your Opttab account. Sign in on any device to access all your saved workspaces across browsers and machines.
